Our Roots

The story of Hoogland’s Landscape is rooted in family, hard work, and a love for the land—passed down through four generations and over 75 years of service.

While our origins trace back to Shreveport in the 1950s, we recognize 1962 as the official founding of Hoogland’s Landscape—when Fred Hoogland purchased Griffith’s Nursery from his father-in-law, Jasper "Jay" Griffith, moved it to Ruston, and established Hoogland’s Nursery and Garden Center.

Jay Griffith, John Hoogland’s great-grandfather, began the original nursery business in the 1950s.

Fred, his son-in-law, earned the first horticulture degree ever awarded from Louisiana Tech University and transformed that nursery into a thriving family operation under the Hoogland name.

One of Fred's proudest accomplishments came later in 1990, when he founded, designed, and built Lincoln Parish Park in Ruston—now a well-loved landmark and community treasure.

This achievement followed Mike’s establishment of the Bossier City branch and serves as a lasting testament to Fred's continued vision and lifelong commitment to enriching the community.

Fred’s son, Mike Hoogland, continued the tradition after earning his own horticulture degree from LA Tech and took over the new Bossier City branch in 1983.

Under Mike’s leadership, the business grew steadily, evolving from a retail nursery into a full-service landscape company focused on design, construction, and maintenance.

It was during this time that the name changed from Hoogland’s Nursery and Garden Center to Hoogland’s Landscaping and Maintenance, reflecting the company’s broader scope of services and growing commercial reach.

By 1992, the team had grown to 25 employees, and by 2010, to 65. Although John had been involved in the business his whole life, he officially began his career at Hoogland’s in 2015.

From that point forward, he and Mike led the company in joint leadership—working side by side to expand the team to over 100 employees, making Hoogland’s the largest landscaping company in North Louisiana and the surrounding areas.

John earned his degree in Landscape Horticulture from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and became President in 2023 following the unexpected passing of his father.

He carries forward Mike’s legacy with the same commitment to integrity, quality, and craftsmanship. As Mike often said, “Our work stares back at us—if we don’t do a good job, it shows.”

Later, under John’s leadership, the company name was streamlined once more to Hoogland’s Landscape—a reflection of a modern, simplified brand that honors tradition while embracing innovation.

Today, John leads the company with a strong foundation, innovative services like AI-powered mowers, and a continued commitment to serving the community that helped shape the business.
